Konak Ferry Terminal

Project Title:  Konak Ferry Terminal: A New Gateway to İzmir

Location:       Konak Square, İzmir, Turkey

Role:              Lead Architectural Designer

Status:           Unbuilt Proposal

Client:            İzmir Metropolitan Municipality

This project proposes a transformative mixed-use regeneration of İzmir’s Konak waterfront, bridging the historic Clock Tower and Kemeraltı Bazaar with a contemporary maritime gateway. The design features a sculptural, organic canopy known as "The Urban Reef," which functions as an elevated extension of the city's park system while sheltering a high-capacity ferry terminal, a naval gallery, and a vibrant marketplace. By mimicking the undulating topography of the surrounding coastline, the structure creates a fluid transition between land and sea, offering sheltered public squares and panoramic rooftop vistas that re-establish the waterfront as the city’s primary civic destination.

The internal program translates the dense, energetic atmosphere of the historic Kemeraltı market into a modern waterfront context, integrating artisanal shops and sea-view cafés alongside cultural exhibition spaces. This multimodal hub is designed to handle high volumes of daily commuters while acting as a cultural anchor that celebrates İzmir’s rich naval heritage. Through its porous architecture and strategic pedestrian links, the project restores the vital connection between the city’s historic heart and the Gulf of İzmir, creating a landmark that is both a functional transit node and a landmark of urban identity
